Granddog Perks

Vito spent last weekend with his 'grandparents' (my parents) while I journeyed to Dubuque for a car show and then up to Minnesota for Bourbon's lure coursing. Vito really enjoys staying with his grandparents, especially during the summer when they take him up to their cabins in Clear Lake. He likes the individual attention and all the swimming!!

Last weekend was time to open the cabins for the summer season so Vito journeyed up to Clear Lake with them, albeit no swimming this time :). It's not quite warm enough!! He did however take along his precious Kong Wubba (don't tell him, but it's really like his 6th one because he keeps destroying them!). He doesn't get to play with it at home very much because he has to play with it alone. Remember, this boy doesn't share well ... especially not his special Kong Wubba :).

Cuddling with the Wubba...
Loving the Wubba...
He was tuckered out by the end of the weekend and ready to come home. He loves his grandparents but you can only have so much vacation!!!

Vito is a tired boy!

Meanwhile, at the car show I was scoping out new rides for the crew. I totally think this should be my next dog-wagon!! I'm sure all 5 dogs could fit in this beast, probably with room to spare :)

Tasty Tuesday - Pumpkin Cherry Cookies

Since Bourbon did such a great this weekend and since I was gone most of the weekend, I thought I would make some time to bake some deliciousness for the puppers. Here are gluten-free Pumpkin Cherry cookies courtesy of the Doggy Dessert Chef.

Ingredients

1/4 cup dried Cherries
1/4 cup Pumpkin Puree
1/2 Brown Rice Flour (I ended up using Soy Flour because that is what I had on hand)
1/4 cup Oats

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  2. In a large bowl mix all ingredients on at a time, kneading well after each addition.
  3. Once dough is well mixed, roll dough into 1/2 inch balls and place them 2 inches apart onto the prepared baking sheet. Press down on the tops to flatten.
  4. Bake for 10 minutes. Cool and refridgerate.
Makes 1 1/2 dozen cookies.

Bourbon's First AKC Title!

Yep, my main man Bourbon got his first AKC title yesterday at the Coursing Aptitude Trial in Minnesota. He can now be known as Bourbon Street Saint, CGC, CA. LOL, I'm probably more excited than he is about it, he just wants to get back out there chase those 'bunnies'. I am glad though that I have found something that he can do that he really, really enjoys. It only took me 8 years! Maybe this will keep him young - be his version of the fountain of youth :).

His awesome New Title Medal!
Mom, I'm ready to run! Let me out of here!!!

Congratulations Bourbon!!

Strut Your Pup Week 2

This week I had planned to take both dogs to Ada Hayden to enjoy a walk around the lakes. I, of course, have to take the dogs separately so that means two trips to the park for me!

Monday's Trip

The weather has been gorgeous lately so Monday and I were eager to get out and enjoy it. I have never taken Monday to Ada Hayden so she had fun checking out all the sights and the ducks!! It was quite busy with lots of families and bikes everywhere but she doesn't mind the activity. It's nice to finally have a normal dog to do stuff with :).

We just walked the north loop because we were running out of daylight. I did make sure to stop a few times for some photo-ops! I must say, my dog is super cute :).

Queen of all she surveys...at least she likes to think so!

Quick stop on the bridge for a photo, she's having lots of fun!

The last side of the loop around the lake. Beautiful sunset :)
Can we go again Mom? Can we please? :)

Baron's Trip

Well Baron was going to go tonight and I was actually going to do the blog post tomorrow, but Iowa weather got in the way. It's snowing...yes in May. Snow is everywhere and it's horrible and cold. So needless to say we will not be going to Ada Hayden tonight, or anywhere else for that matter. Baron's trip has been postponed until next week when it's May appropriate weather again. And to make it up, he'll get an extra special trip next week :).

Really? This much snow in MAY?!?

Not cool...

A lot of people like snow. I find it to be an unnecessary freezing of water.  ~Carl Reiner

Confessions of a Dog Trainer - 1

I HATE Flexi-leads (retractable leashes) and frequently rant about them but I use one. And I actually own 3 of them <gasp>!

THERE, I said it.

BUT with that being said (aren't there always caveat's for everything??), there are only certain situations that I use them in - potty time.

Flexi-leads were originally designed for hunters who had tracker dogs.
They allowed the dog to wander a certain distance away from the handler
so that he could track unnoticed by prey, but still remain close by. I think it is safe
to assume most people using them are no hunters, and do not have tracking dogs :).

The issue is that people don't know how to use them properly, which is why I hate them in public where most people 'misuse' them. Like all 'tools', if they're misused/abused, they are just as dangerous as anything else. But they do have their place if used correctly. Unfortunately, many people don't use them correctly, and that is when you start hearing all the horror stories - dogs walking into traffic (especially at corners) and dogs getting tangled up with other people, other dogs, trees, etc. As any dog trainer (even me!) will tell you, you usually do not have control of your dog if it's on a long leash that far away from you. I cannot tell you how many times I've seen a dog round the corner seemingly without an owner, only to see the owner 15 feet later, trying to reel the dog in - yank, click, yank, click.

When I use a flexi, my thumb is ALWAYS touching the brake button, and my attention is ALWAYS on my dog and the surrounding area. Plus, I only use them in my immediate yard and neighbor's yard. I do not use them for walks, being in a public places, or training time. They are strictly for potty (especially in the rain so I can stand under the overhang, haha).

Should they be used in all situations? No. Does everyone use them correctly? No. But to say they're all bad is not the truth either. It's COMMON SENSE people! I know such a novel idea...

... it's enough to make your head hurt.
